About the Journal

Pūhau ana te rā: Tailwinds is an academic journal focused on gathering the insights from the work of students and emerging researchers, that can accelerate our progress towards a thriving future.

Pūhau ana te rā refers to the wind filling your sails. This related to the tailwind conditions that engaging students and emerging researchers can provide, as we journey towards a thriving future.

It would be counterproductive to further define a thriving future here. We expect that visioning a thriving future will be a key part of the discussion in many contributions. However, as a start point authors might begin by referring to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as a source of commonly referenced concepts associated with a thriving future.

This journal has developed in response to the contribution made by several years of student work in both course based projects and scholarship projects at the University of Otago. Pūhau ana te rā: Tailwinds is a platform for that contribution to be captured, and the impact scaled, by welcoming similar work from around the world.

The underlying purpose of this journal is to realise the maximum potential from the valuable work done by students and early stage researchers. As such equity is a core guiding principle. Equity in the ability to share work and be recognised, and equity in the ablity to access that work.

Therefore, to enable equity in the ability to share work, a diverse range of submission types are supported. Submissions can include:

In fact, any medium will be considered on the merits of what is communicated, rather than the medium through which it is communicated. To support search functionality and analysis of the contributions over time, each submission, no matter the medium must be supported by an abstract with stipulated key elements.

All submissions will be double blind peer reviewed. The review process is based on the principle of whakamana (empower, validate, or enable). It is a developmental process that seeks to both build the confidence and capabilities of the submitting authors, and to recognise the vulnerability and courage required to share your work in public, at an early stage in your development as a researcher.

To enable equity in access there will be no submission charge or access fees. All publications are subject to a Creative Commons Attribution License by default (CC-BY- 4.0). Authors retain copyright and full publishing rights without restricitons. As such Pūhau ana te rā: Tailwinds aspires to the Diamond Standard of open access publishing.
