Increasing recycling at the University of Otago

Abstract

Sustainability is an important consideration at the University of Otago, as part of achieving its Net Zero 2040 goals. The university aims to reduce total waste and increase in the diversion rate of recycling. The objective of this research was to investigate how to increase the diversion rate of recycling in residential colleges and shared spaces on campus. Previous research at Otago has made recommendations about how to improve waste management in certain areas. We build on this foundation by gathering perspectives from University staff to identify solutions to specific challenges at the University of Otago. Interviews were conducted with students and key stakeholders in residential colleges involved in recycling and waste management at Otago. Results suggest that education, participation, and information are the main areas for improvement, educating students by encouraging involvement in events and increasing the amount of posters, also, providing the waste and recycling data collected by Waste Management NZ to halls to track improvement and see any areas of concern.
